I see that Madonna has deleted the singer Pink from her Instagram friend list, and is now being accused of belatedly supporting the Palestinian cause because it has become fashionable and socially acceptable to do so.

Whatever one thinks of that particular controversy, Madonna has been a long-time advocate of Palestinian independence. I can say that from personal experience.

Six years ago, she was the first celebrity to respond positively when I approached a number of well-known figures for help promoting my petition calling on Google to include Palestine on its maps. Madonna was not merely willing to lend her support. She went so far as to pose for press photographs holding a printout of my map. She later posted a message on Instagram saying: “Put Palestine back on the map” followed by“#IStandWithPalestine”
